Printmaking is one of the most varied and versatile media in the visual arts, taking as many forms as the artists who have refined its techniques over the centuries. Copper has been the traditional plate of choice for etching, and while the Industrial Revolution introduced cheaper, faster alternatives like zinc, it remains customary for those specialising in printmaking to begin with copper — learning its full range of possibilities before moving on to other materials.
Across six sessions, you'll be introduced to the craft of preparing and handling copper plates, etching lines, working with aquatint for tonal effects, and exploring a handful of experimental techniques along the way. The course covers both line and tone, giving you a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of Intaglio. This course is designed for beginners and those with some prior experience.
No previous printmaking experience is required — everyone is welcome! If you do have some background, all the better.
A basic knowledge of drawing or image-making is helpful (photography, collage, etc.), as is a love for process and learning:-)
Sessions take place on a combination of Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings.
Dates are arranged around your availability and finalised together once you've booked.

All tools (burnishers, scrapers, drypoint needles, roulettes, and more), as well as solvents, acids, and inks.
Source material: drawings, photographs, magazine clippings, books — anything that inspires you and that you'd like to work from.
Two copper plates: available from Boesner or Modulor. Further details will be sent after booking.
Printmaking paper: can be purchased through the instructor, or in advance from Boesner or Modulor.
An apron or clothes you don't mind getting dirty.
