Aquatint was developed to achieve a broad range of tonal values and shadows in Intaglio printmaking around the 17th century most notably by the artist Goya. Since then it has widely been used along side line etching to provide graphic work with a variety of painterly effects as well as textures, tones and depth.

During this course, we will learn how to use different Aquatint techniques (rosin/asphalt and spray paint) to explore ways of creating rich tones on your etched plates. Working with zinc, you will be able to produce tonal surfaces from light to rich velvety blacks.

This workshop is based on previous knowledge and experience in Etching. We will only briefly prepare plates for Aquatint before diving directly into the world of tones and shadows. For a thorough beginners workshop, please sign up to the Introduction to Etching workshop.

All basic tools are provided by the Workshop (tools, solvents, acids and inks)

The workshop will span over 2 Printmaking sessions, over one weekend:

Saturday 10:00 - 14:00

Sunday 11:00 - 15:00

Requirements:

  • Students must have a basic knowledge of etching procedures to participate (mastering of etching and some recent experience)

  • Please bring along plates with line etching and/or some research/images to work from: drawings, magazine clippings, books, photographs – anything that’ll inspire you.
